Once again we will thank our donors, showcase the talent and work of our grantee organizations throughout the state, and honor an outstanding woman with our Alice Paul Award. Last year we were privileged to honor Lt. Gov. Diane Denish with this award, which is named for Alice Paul, author of the Equal Rights Amendment, founder of the National Woman’s Party, and a lifelong activist for women’s equality.

New Mexico Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish
The award itself is entirely handmade by Beatrice Sandoval of Las Vegas, NM. Bea starts by raising her own sheep, then shearing, carding, and spinning the wool, then dyeing the wool and weaving it. After embroidery lettering is finished, using the historic Colcha method, Bea adds decorative elements. And that’s just the first part. She creates a wood frame and covers it with hand-punched tin work.
New Mexico Women’s Foundation honors Diane Denish with its highest award, the Alice Paul Award, for setting an example to women everywhere as an entrepreneur and as a pioneer leader in government; for building connections between businesses and programs in their communities, for her unyielding commitment to improving schools; and for her dedication to providing health insurance coverage to all New Mexicans.
